About
GTA provided environmental, geotechnical, construction observation and testing services in support of the redevelopment of a portion of the former Chrysler manufacturing facility, now part of the University of Delaware’s Science Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus, for a new three-story, 325,000-SF research facility. The new facility was designed for collaboration and innovation and connects the industry leader with one of the foremost bio-engineering schools in the country. The facility has more than 100 labs, a blast chamber, 50 specialty rooms, cafes, conference rooms, and 20 “huddle” rooms for small group meetings.
Development of the site was overseen by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Significant environmental and geotechnical issues had to be overcome throughout the design and construction process due to the site’s former use, including properly managing various contaminants and removal of deep buried structures.
GTA’s construction observation and testing services for the new facility included soil rehabilitation with a combination of soil cement lime-kiln dust, and quicklime, sediment and erosion control, roadways, subsurface utilities, stormwater management facilities, vapor mitigation system, slab-on-grade, structural steel, elevated slab-on-decks, and fireproofing.
