“MEDA Award – Small Community Economic Development,” by Maryland Economic Development Association
GTA provided geotechnical engineering and a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment for Great Wolf Lodge’s largest indoor water park and hotel to date. GTA is currently providing construction observation and testing services for the six-story complex located on 48 acres in the Town of Perryville. Once complete, the six-story facility will include a 126,000-SF indoor water park, 700-family-friendly suites, a 57,000-SF family entertainment center, 12,000 SF of flexible conference space with breakout rooms amongst numerous other amenities. The site was previously mined for its sand and gravel. Due to the mining reclamation efforts, a portion of the building’s foundation subgrade was remediated with geopiers. Pavement thickness was reduced by using Portland cement to stabilize the pavement subgrades. Construction observation and testing services include cold formed metal framing observations, structural steel observations, metal deck and roofing observations, as well as observation and testing of masonry. The work is in a fast-paced environment with much of the work being completed on a design-build basis. GTA has to react to constant change and stay up to date with various revisions and modifications. Additionally, GTA provided creative solutions to reuse or remove unsuitable mining spoils. GTA also performed geotechnical engineering and wetland services associated with planned improvements to the I-95 north-bound off ramp and Maryland Route 222.
